Rube

In the heart of Barcelona you can find the neighbourhood of El Raval, commonly known as “barrio chino” (“Chinatown”). This name was given in 1925 by a local scriptwriter and journalist who filmed there a series of documental. He decided to give it this name because of his similarity to the “Chinatown” of San Francisco; not because there was a Chinese community living on it, but because of the marginality, the dirt and the presence of mafias, prostitution and the so called “mala vida” (low life) in general.

During Franco dictatorship, El Raval was considered a way of escape for the dark and sad reality of the time, a hiding place where people could let loose their wishes of a forbidden freedom.

In this dark narrow street neighbourhood there is a mixture of cultures and nationalities living together. You can breathe the essence of the “lousy” Barcelona in its nightlife, nothing to do with the tourist life shown by the guidebooks. This is the only place where you can already find the authentic Barcelona, full of singular characters.

In one of its labyrinthine streets we find “El Cangrejo” (The Crab), a cabaret resemblance bar dating from the beginning of the 20th century. A wide variety of artists acted in its small stage performing infinity of shows along its more than 100 years of history. Its peculiar scenery, the performances still taking place and its ambience remind of those Chinatown times.

This is the scenario where Rubén works making his show night after night every weekend together with other two co-workers. In his show, he mixes monologues and play back songs dressing spectacular and stunning women clothes designed by him. When Rubén leaves his dressing room and becomes “Rube”, his character grabs the attention of every gaze in the local. His strength, nerve and charm are incomparable.

Rubén has been working in “El Cangrejo” for more than 20 years, but his artistic career is so much longer, however, nobody knows his age, it is his secret and as the big artist he is, he will never confess it. The reason: “have birthdays is a coarse”, he states.

Rube
